Although vulvodynia is not a psychological disorder, numerous studies have confirmed that women with certain personality attributes are more vulnerable to experiencing genital pain. For example, women with vestibulodynia often have a history of anxiety, perfectionism, and a fear of negative evaluation. We believe that these states induce a feeling of anxiety that then makes the woman more vulnerable to the experience of genital pain.

It is also clear that vestibulodynia can be an enormous stress for women (and their partners). The stress generated by this condition can, in fact, intensify the pain. This is because the increased stress increases the number of excitatory signals from the brain to the spinal cord. It has been shown that psychological techniques focused on stress reduction, anxiety control and relaxation have a positive benefit on genital pain.
